Cisco Spaces, from design to go-live
Cisco Spaces turns your wireless network into a source of location, occupancy and environment data. We make it work, and we make sure the data is right.
What Cisco Spaces does for you
- Right Now and Location Analytics: crowding and visitor flows, live and historical
- Detect & Locate: devices and tags on the floor plan
- IoT Services and asset tracking: find pumps, wheelchairs, carts and tools
- Smart Workspaces: rooms and desks, with data from Webex devices and sensors
- Captive portal and OpenRoaming: guests online, securely and automatically
Why Spaces projects disappoint
Most problems are not in Spaces but in the network underneath. Access points without a perimeter around the floor, a default site tag that silently disables location, no NTP on the access points, or floor plans at the wrong scale. The result: dots jumping through walls and dashboards nobody trusts.
That is why we start with the wireless design and the controller, and only then switch on the apps. What we run into in practice, we describe in our guides on Cisco Community.
Our approach
- Intake: goals, use cases, floor plans and the right licence
- Connect the network: Spaces Connector and Catalyst 9800, Catalyst Center or Meraki
- Maps and hierarchy: location hierarchy in your terms, zones and exclusion areas
- Validation: measure accuracy at test points and adjust access points
- Apps and handover: Right Now, analytics, Smart Workspaces, APIs and documentation
Which licence do you need?
Cisco renamed the Spaces packages: SEE is now Essential, ACT is now Advantage. With Cisco Wireless Advantage (CW-A or MR-A) you already have Spaces Advantage, including Smart Workspaces and IoT. We look at the use cases you want and make sure you do not pay twice.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need new access points for Cisco Spaces?
Not always. Cisco Spaces works with Catalyst 9100, Cisco Wireless and Meraki access points. For accurate location, placement often matters more than the model. Sub-metre UWB needs Wi-Fi 7 access points (CW9176, CW9178).
Does Cisco Spaces work with Meraki?
Yes, cloud to cloud without a connector on site. With Catalyst 9800 the data goes through the Spaces Connector, a virtual machine in your network.
How accurate is the location?
With a standard design 5 to 10 metres, with FastLocate 5 to 7 metres and with UWB under a metre. The accuracy you need depends on the use case: occupancy needs far less than asset tracking.
Can I make a first estimate myself?
Yes, with our free Spaces Designer: pick your venue, use cases and building, and you immediately see the number of access points, the controller, connector, licence and PoE, with the calculation behind it.
